Rochester Community and Technical College is proud to announce the opening of All That Glitters, a collection by Roger Boulay, artist, curator, and educator based in Winona, Minnesota. The All That Glitters exhibition is on display in the RCTC Art Gallery now through Friday, March 4, 2022. The exhibition is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm.
Boulay collected over 1,000 used paperback book covers that contained a gold element, often embossed gold text. He meticulously painted around the original gold portions using gold paint to see what happened when he erased the color gold with itself. This process resulted in clashes of different shades of gold or revealed other colors (yellows, bronzes, and oranges) either described as gold or confused with gold, perhaps as a kind of “fool’s” gold. This clash of color speaks to discrepancies in how we assign value. The economic value of cultural production such as fiction has become increasingly unclear as print media begins to disappear.
Roger Boulay has exhibited his work nationally, including solo exhibitions at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York; and at Gallery 19 in Chicago, Illinois. Boulay is the recipient of a 2018 Southeastern Minnesota Artist Council grant and the 2018-19 recipient of the Professional Excellence award at Winona State University.
