Don’t let a dead battery slow you down

There’s more to staying safe in Minnesota winters than walking like a penguin on icy sidewalks.

RCTC’s Campus Safety Coordinator, Andy Hamann, has a list of simple safety precautions that can be taken now and throughout the year to reduce risk in all aspects of getting around on campus.

Ô Always lock your doors.

Ô Avoid leaving expensive items (purses, electronics, etc.) in plain view on the seats.

Ô Check that headlights and interior lights are turned off.

Ô Pair up when leaving campus after dark. Campus Safety personnel are also available to provide escorts at any time.

Ô Report falls, even if uninjured, so Campus Safety can document it and fix the area.

Most of all, Hamann stressed the importance of awareness.

“If people see things that seem a little strange, we’re really encouraging people to let us know,” he said.

The Campus Safety department also offers free jump-starts and are even able to unlock your car if you accidentally leave your keys inside. And while a triple-parking situation earlier this semester did result in some vehicles being towed, Hamann reported that Campus Safety is usually able to track down students in class to request they move their vehicle.

“We’re working to save people time and money by offering these services,” Hamman said.
