Have you ever thought about how much work goes into the seamless performance of your favorite concert? Lights, speaker placement, and video projection – these aspects can only happen with careful planning and expertise.
If you’d like to learn more, the Music Tech Club might be for you. This club encourages students to pursue interests including DJ-ing and digital music production in a fun and social setting, said club president Lily Barby. The club, she said, gives students hands-on experience with the production process and use of equipment. And the coolest part? This club is responsible for the set-up of campus events, including live speakers and music performances.
Without this important behind-the-scenes work, many events would lack ambiance and amplification, said member Azaliah Jeresek, who has been an active member of the club for a year.
The Music Tech Club is open to any student interested in performance set-up, regardless of musical degree. “It’s useful even if you’re not a music major,” president Barby said, “and if you are [a music major], it just expands on the skills of actual production.”
The club meets Thursdays at 3:15 p.m. in room CC412 in the main building. Members typically use the time to plan staffing for upcoming events, including Live at the Hive and open mic nights. Jeresek and Barby agree that the club builds RCTC teamwork, and helps students apply their learned skills to production opportunities in the real world.
One upcoming collaboration between the Music Tech Club and other RCTC groups is Fright Night, an annual Halloween party on campus Oct. 28, beginning at 5 p.m. The evening will feature live music, lights and a projector show. “A bunch of clubs contribute to Fright Night,” Barby said, “[so] it’s a great way for people to get involved and see everyone’s work.
Also coming up: a talent show Nov. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor cafeteria. Students are encouraged to participate and show off their skills! The sign-up deadline is Oct. 28. For more information, contact Lily Barby at lily.barby@my.rctc.edu.
