It was announced today by members of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) that in light of COVID-19 and the importance of player safety, the fall sports seasons for football, volleyball, and soccer are cancelled.
“I feel absolutely terrible about this for our student athletes and our coaches, but in our efforts to follow current guidance and eliminate safety concerns, it is in everyone’s best interest to forego the fall athletic season,” said Jeffery Boyd, Ed.D., President of RCTC.
This news comes after strong seasons for all three RCTC teams including a national tournament appearance for the RCTC Yellowjacket Volleyball squad, plus Regional and Conference tournament action for Football and Soccer.
“This is of course very disappointing for our coaches and student-athletes,” said Mike Lester, RCTC’s Director of Athletics. “Our coaches and staff have been committed to the academic and athletic success and the support of our student-athletes during these trying times. They have worked to recruit student-athletes from across the area, the region, and the country to represent RCTC. However, ensuring everyone’s safety and well-being is of the utmost priority for the Department, the College, and Minnesota State.”
This decision also impacts some competition by other teams including wrestling, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s basketball. All late-fall and early-winter starting sports will begin their seasons in Spring Semester. This will include cancelling non-conference scrimmages and play scheduled prior to the beginning of January 2021.
